Why I Wish I Could Draw (And Animate)

I finished my assignment, and here it is:

I still wish I could draw better. I wish I could animate better! Well, at least I know what I need to work on. :)

My fellow classmates' work turned out so much better... but I'm still proud of my work.

I Wish I Could Draw

I'm working on an animation project for school right now, and all I keep thinking is, "I really wish I could draw!"

I'm probably over-simplifying my plight because I can "sort-of-draw," and I've taken art and drawing classes throughout my years and understand certain basics, but I'm definitely not an illustrator and I am not constantly honing my illustrative skills like the animation or graphic design students at my school. Also, as a film student, there aren't even any drawing classes required--but, based on the requirements that are demanded of us in our animation classes, I think that there should be.

The project that I'm working on is a 30 second opening sequence for my school's student news program. It's supposed to represent Sacramento, student news, and our school (The Art Institute of California, Sacramento). Writing a general outline for it, I can do. Writing a script for it, I can do. Storyboarding stick-figures, scribbles, and blobs with labels arrowed to them I can do. But creating good quality graphics that I can animate and apply 3D animation to? Meh... makes my stomach hurt. I can do some things, but they take a really, really long time.

As a matter of fact, this yellow bridge (meant to represent The Tower Bridge in downtown Sacramento) took me pretty much five hours.

It took so long because I did research on the bridge first, looked up some examples of vector bridge images, and then tried to create my bridge in Illustrator. Fail. Once upon a time I used to know how to use Illustrator... now, not so much. So, after wasting a good amount of time in Illustrator, I gave up and headed over to Photoshop. I still had some trouble trying to create a "cut out" effect for the white space, and it took a lot of swapping between colors, painting things back in, selecting, erasing, etc... to get it to look somewhat how I wanted it to.

I have a bunch more images to create, and it's boggling my mind. I should have started this project much earlier (it's due tomorrow!) but knowing my limits I could not come up with an idea that I could actually follow through with. All week I had all of these really cool ideas for an opening sequence... but after storyboarding each idea, I realized that there was no way I could pull them off without stronger skills in drawing and animation. Bummer. So, yesterday I managed to re-vamp all of my creative ideas, simplify them, and came up with something I thought I might be able to do. I started working on the project this morning, thinking I would have time.

Unfortunately the idea I have in mind still seems really complicated to me, but it's the most simple one I have come up with yet and now there's no time to think of another. I guess we'll see what I can do in After Effects after I have all of the images created. *sigh*

To make matters worse, I've been sick all day with asthma without much relief from my inhalers. *boo*  I also have to get up at 6:00AM... or not sleep at all... or ditch class from my utter humiliation and failure. One or the other. But, let's end this post on a positive note!

A note of positivity: Look at that beautiful yellow bridge! :)

Korean Drama: Scent of a Woman (여인의 향기 / Yeon-in-eui Hyang-gi)

What would you do if you only had 6 months left to live? 34-year-old office worker Lee Yeon-Jae faces this very question after finding out she has cancer and a limited lifespan in Scent of a Woman (여인의 향기 / Yeon-in-eui Hyang-gi), a Korean drama that originally aired in 2011.

In the very beginning of this drama, Lee Yeon-Jae is timid and under-appreciated and emotionally abused at her work by her boss and fellow co-workers. After she finds out she is dying, she tries to continue her normal routine, but finds herself completely fed up and has an emotional outburst at work -- why should she have to put up with such a toxic environment when she only has a little time left?

Lee Yon-Jae quits her job in an epic fashion, takes a luxurious vacation, and comes back a renewed woman (complete with a makeover, of course!).

I just finished watching episode 2 am in the middle of episode 5 and there are 16 episodes total, so there is a lot more renewing to be had by Lee Yeon-Jae, and so far I am not disappointed!

You can watch Scent of a Woman here:

Here's a fanmade music video that isn't TOTALLY full of spoilers (but there are some):

Grain-Free Microwave Brownies

Our oven has been broken for a while now, and I really miss my homemade gluten-free and/or grain-free treats. I love the ability to still be able to indulge in a dessert and completely control what I put in it, especially in concerns to the carb content, sugar content, and grain content. I also love being able to decide what type of oil I add to my food.

So far, I've found two microwave recipes online, and one no-bake recipe. The no-bake recipe is for chocolate coconut cookies. One of the microwave recipes is for a "mug cake" that I honestly did not like... and the latest recipe I've found is for grain-free brownie bites by The Detoxinista.

I LOVE the grain-free brownie bites recipe. They hit the spot wonderfully! The original recipe has directions for the oven, but I was able to figure out how to cook it in the microwave.

After combining all of the ingredients together in a bowl, poor the batter into a microwave-safe baking dish. Microwave on high for 5 minutes, and let it sit in the microwave for another couple minutes before handling (it will be very hot!). Take out of the microwave and cool either on the counter or in the refrigerator for another ten minutes... and there you go!

Can't wait to try these out again~

I'm Still Around

Wow, I can't believe my last blog post was in January!

I have no intention to stop blogging completely anytime soon, but instead took a rather long hiatus.

But I'm back!

I'm hoping to blog about some recipes I'm going to try this week as well as other things (like my newly discovered loves and obsessions with Pinterest, Eat Your Kimchi, and Desperate Housewives).

Do you have a Pinterest account? Feel free to check out my boards and follow my pins! :)
